Tyler and Lily, both employees at Elmhurst Hospital, found themselves facing an unexpected challenge when their newborn, Teddy, required an extended NICU stay in November 2024. While Lily recovered at home, Tyler navigated the NICU experience largely alone, finding solace in the Ronald McDonald Family Room. The space became a refuge where he could decompress, connect with supportive staff, and bring home fresh juices for Lily. As weeks passed, the Family Room provided Tyler with much-needed comfort, reinforcing the mission of Ronald McDonald House New York in supporting families during difficult times.
By late December, Lily was able to reunite with Teddy, experiencing firsthand the warmth of the Family Room that had become a vital part of Tyler’s routine. Their journey concluded with a special NICU graduation celebration, marking Teddy’s discharge and their deep appreciation for the Family Room team. Their story highlights the power of community and support in times of uncertainty, embodying the mission of Ronald McDonald House New York as it continues to provide care, connection, and hope to families in need.

During Thanksgiving week 2024, Ronald McDonald House New York launched The Great Thanksgiving Listen, an initiative inspired by StoryCorps to capture the heartfelt stories of caregivers, staff, and volunteers. Led by Hannah, the House’s social work manager, and Tim, the Digital Communications Specialist, the project facilitated 30-minute interviews between individuals connected to RMH-NY. Among the most compelling pairings were caregivers Melissa and Tamika, whose unexpected friendship blossomed through shared experiences at the House. Despite coming from different backgrounds, their bond grew as they navigated the challenges of caring for their children, finding solace and strength in each other.

Melissa, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, shared her journey of supporting her son through leukemia treatment, while Tamika, from Rochester, New York, reflected on the hardships of being away from home and grieving her mother’s passing while caring for her daughter, who awaits a heart transplant.
Through their stories, they highlighted the unique support system within RMH-NY, where caregivers uplift one another, children form friendships, and cultural differences dissolve in the face of shared adversity. Their experience underscores the House’s mission—not just as a place of respite but as a community of care, resilience, and hope.

This Black History Month, we honor three pioneers whose groundbreaking contributions have shaped pediatric cancer and illness research. Their dedication and innovation have saved lives and continue to inspire future generations.
Dr. Charles R. Drew revolutionized blood storage and transfusion medicine, making vital treatments more accessible for children battling cancer. Dr. Alexa Irene Canady, the first African American woman neurosurgeon, transformed pediatric neurosurgery, improving outcomes for children with neurological conditions. Henrietta Lacks’ HeLa cells became the foundation for countless medical breakthroughs, advancing cancer research and treatment.
Their legacies inspire us to continue providing care, support, and hope to families facing pediatric illness.
