Ronald McDonald House New York's volunteers are the heart of our House. Without your continuous support, RMH-NY would not be the same. Volunteers add laughter, love and joy to each and every day. While we are currently unable to have volunteers physically at the House during the COVID-19 outbreak, we wanted to bring our praise and thanks straight from our House to yours through virtual wellness opportunities. Join us each day this week at 7PM for a new way to feel lightened, joyful and connected to our community. We are inviting all volunteers, staff, RMH-NY families and the greater community to join in! Wellness Volunteers of the House have graciously volunteered their time and expertise to lead the following classes this week:
Sunday, April 19 – Yoga with Annemarie Gallipoli
Annemarie started her yoga journey about 17 years ago. She was looking for something else to do and little did she know, she would find it in her mat. It is there that she learned to breathe and to find her strength. After practicing for several years and finding that peace and serenity whenever she came to her mat, she knew that she wanted to share this special gift with others. In 2018, Annemarie completed her Yoga Teacher training and that training really prepared her for what came next. She graduated training in October and in January was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. When she had her biopsy, lumbar spinal tap and chemo treatments, she always practiced her yogic breath. She knew it would get her through. In this class we will practice restorative yoga. This practice is a deep healing practice that can be done by most everyone. When you do this practice, you go onward and allow yourself to let go and to heal!
Monday, April 20 – Workout Training Session with Brandon Tomasso
Brandon is a Personal Trainer specializing in corrective exercise. He competed in D-1 fencing in college and played various sports growing up, so has endured numerous injuries and set-backs, including a chronic lower back injury he is still conquering today. As such, his mission as a trainer is to help people fight and, more importantly, prevent injuries. This session will focus on teaching you movements that will help you gain the core strength, leg strength and overall flexibility necessary to prevent or mitigate lower back pain, which can occur more frequently under quarantine conditions (sitting frequently, hunched over a computer or phone and not walking as much as we are accustomed). It will be a standalone strength and conditioning workout infused with tricks to keep lower back pain away!
Tuesday, April 21 – Cooking Class with Margo Christofer
Easy & Delicious: Join Margo in a cooking demonstration for step by step tasty dish with few ingredients. Margo is a retired middle school Health Education teacher. She volunteers once a week at RMH-NY’s Wellness Center often making healthy snacks or appetizers for those who come up to visit. In her cooking demo, she will teach you to make a simple appetizer that is a favorite for all occasions. This no fail recipe only requires 4 ingredients and an oven. I guarantee it is delicious even if not the most healthy. We need to indulge somewhat especially at a time like this.
For those who may want to make along with me, the ingredients are:
1 can artichoke hearts (quartered or whole)
1 8 ounce block of cream cheese ( regular or 1/3 reduced fat)
1 cup mayonnaise ( regular or light)
1/2 cup grated cheese
Have a pie plate, loaf pan or any style baking dish available. Serve with crackers of your choice.
Wednesday, April 22 – Stretching with Beth Simoes
Beth is a Pilates instructor and physical therapist in NYC. The focus of the stretching class will be to teach postures to increase flexibility and general body awareness.
Thursday, April 23 – Pilates with Becky Kohberger
Becky has been teaching all types of fitness at Ronald McDonald House New York for over a year. She is a WITS certified personal trainer, a Balanced Body certified reformer and mat pilates instructor, and an ACE certified group fitness instructor. For the live class she will be doing a mix of cardio and at home strength training. The work out is for all ages and levels and will require no equipment. If you’re looking to get yourself moving during this lock in, this is the class for you!
Friday, April 24 – Yoga with Clare Patterson
Yoga is a safe, gentle, and effective way to keep your body flexible and strong. Expect flowing sun salutations, hip opening postures, breath work, stretching, and relaxation. Open to all levels. Clare is an E-RYT 500hr Yoga Teacher , y4c (yoga for cancer) senior teacher, and Yoga Therapist for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Saturday, April 25 – Qigong with Lia Gavilanes
How to establish a self-care routine including self-massage, recognizing your individual needs and resources for self-maintenance In the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. Lia is a Massage Therapist and Reiki practitioner that focus her work in helping people to become empowered to improve their quality of life through an integrative and active approach.
